About Maurice Marine

From the electrical schematic to the work itself

Maurice Marine Electrical Services is a Melbourne marine electrical practice. Today the work is documentation-led — survey-based electrical schematics, labelling, upgrade planning and AS/NZS 3004 compliance — built on the same engineering discipline a boat's wiring needs to be worked to.

We work with leisure boat owners documenting a system for insurance, survey, resale or a refit, and with commercial fishing operators who need NSCV and AMSA documentation for working vessels. Marine surveyors, insurers, brokers and refit yards commission the same work for vessels they're assessing or selling.

Who's Behind Maurice Marine

Bassem Maurice — ABYC Certified Marine Electrician

I spent the first twenty years of my career a long way from boats — in the part of the electrical industry where getting it wrong doesn't mean a blown fuse, it means a substation going dark. As an engineer, and later a program and product leader at companies in electrical protection and grid automation, I specified protection systems, ran risk assessments (FMEA) across design and process, and managed compliance retrofits on switchgear built to standards that don't forgive shortcuts — the same discipline AS/NZS 3004 asks of a boat's electrical system, just at a different scale.

That background is what marine electrical documentation was missing, in my view — not more hands with a multimeter, but the habit that's standard practice in grid and industrial electrical work: calculate a system before building it, document it once it's built, and check it against a standard afterwards, rather than relying on memory and judgement.

I became an ABYC Certified Marine Electrician in 2025 and set up Maurice Marine to bring that engineering discipline to boat owners and marine trades around Melbourne and coastal Victoria — drafting, labelling, standards review and upgrade planning, done the way any other piece of safety-critical equipment already gets documented.

What we do

Four services, each built from the same on-site survey:

Electrical system drafting

Survey-based CAD electrical schematics delivered as an interactive, cross-referenced PDF plus an editable file — the as-built record insurers and surveyors ask for.

Electrical system labelling

Durable, marine-grade circuit labelling applied to the same identifiers as the electrical schematic, for fast fault-finding and survey.

Upgrade & refit planning

A phased plan, bill of materials and budget for a refit or a lithium / solar upgrade, so the work can be staged and costed before anything is wired.

Standards & compliance review

An independent assessment of the installation against AS/NZS 3004, with issues prioritised by risk and written to be acted on directly.

How we work

Every job starts with an on-site visit — we come to the boat at its marina, mooring or anchorage. Drawings and reports reflect what is actually wired on the vessel, verified in person, not reconstructed from manufacturer literature or memory. Deliverables are written in plain English with labelled schematics and clear next steps.

We work Melbourne first, then coastal Victoria — Geelong, the Mornington Peninsula, Portland and Lakes Entrance — and Australia-wide by arrangement.

Standards

AS/NZS 3004 is the applicable Australian standard for marine electrical installations and the benchmark for our drafting and compliance work. ABYC E-11 is referenced as supplementary international best practice, kept clearly separate from the AS/NZS 3004 findings — never presented as an equivalent standard. For commercial fishing vessels, NSCV and AMSA considerations are addressed specifically.
